Since being founded in 1881, the Red Cross has been a consistent lifeline for people when they are needed most. The depth and breadth of our services – whenever and wherever they're called for – is unmatched by any organization in the world.

The governing body of the American Red Cross is the Board of Governors, which has all powers of governing and directing, and of overseeing the management of the business and affairs of the organization. The corporate governance principles of the American Red Cross are found in the Congressional Charter of the American Red Cross and a series of documents adopted by the Board of Governors and reviewed periodically to ensure they continue to meet the needs of the organization and reflect current industry best practices.
